The Learning Factor

The Learning Factor

by Daniel Belcher

What does it take to learn? Do we apply ourselves to the task at hand? These are two interesting questions that we should occasionally ask ourselves. I have found myself sometimes waiting for directions and not applying myself to the subject or task. Granted there are times when it is best to wait for instruction and directions because of the nature of the work or the potential danger. This article is not written for those types of situations.

One of the elders in my church stated in short that a lot times we don’t learn some things because we don’t apply ourselves. We sometimes say to ourselves on the inside that I must wait to be taught to learn this or that. And, so we continues to make excuses for not putting our minds to work; we would rather sit back and watch time roll by. I can tell you from experience if we apply ourselves to various subjects i.e. math, reading, history, algebra, and others; we would be surprised at what we could learn by applying ourselves.

There are times when we say I am waiting for this class or this course. Don’t spend your whole life waiting for a special class or a special course; it may never come. I have seen many talented people waste a lot years of their lives waiting for a special time to learn. My challenge to you is to not waste your time anymore.

We should begin for make our own best effort to learn what we desire to learn. For example, you may have a feeling that you may have a talent for learning math, don’t wait for a special class or time. Your next step for learning math is to go to the library or buy a math book; don’t wait. Maybe, know deep down inside your heart of hearts that you have a gift for learning languages, again, don’t wait for a special time or class, buy the language book and get started. I think you can see pattern; we all have certain talents and abilities. My Aunt used to tell me, whatever you can learn can’t be taken away from you. Her point was that we should learn all you can.

Build your own inner library of facts, skills and abilities. Some of the worlds best business men have never set foot in any business school. Some of the worlds best language grammarians have become experts by own self study efforts. Some of the worlds most powerful preacher have never seen the inside of a theological school. The list goes on and on of those has set their mind to the task of learning. People with this type of drive and determination are often the pillars of society; their talents have benefited us all.

My challenge to you is to learn all that you can, to apply yourself, and encourage other to learn, don’t wait for a special time or place. Take Care!

I retired from United States Navy in 2003, after serving over 21 years of enlisted active duty on board several different ships and a few shore assignments. I am married.
