The Learning
Factor
The Learning Factor
by Daniel Belcher
What does it take to learn? Do we apply
ourselves to the task at hand? These are two interesting questions that
we should occasionally ask ourselves. I have found myself sometimes
waiting for directions and not applying myself to the subject or task.
Granted there are times when it is best to wait for instruction and
directions because of the nature of the work or the potential danger.
This article is not written for those types of situations.
One of the elders in my church stated
in short that a lot times we don’t learn some things because we don’t
apply ourselves. We sometimes say to ourselves on the inside that I must
wait to be taught to learn this or that. And, so we continues to make
excuses for not putting our minds to work; we would rather sit back and
watch time roll by. I can tell you from experience if we apply ourselves
to various subjects i.e. math, reading, history, algebra, and others; we
would be surprised at what we could learn by applying ourselves.
There are times when we say I am
waiting for this class or this course. Don’t spend your whole life
waiting for a special class or a special course; it may never come. I
have seen many talented people waste a lot years of their lives waiting
for a special time to learn. My challenge to you is to not waste your
time anymore.
We should begin for make our own best
effort to learn what we desire to learn. For example, you may have a
feeling that you may have a talent for learning math, don’t wait for a
special class or time. Your next step for learning math is to go to the
library or buy a math book; don’t wait. Maybe, know deep down inside
your heart of hearts that you have a gift for learning languages, again,
don’t wait for a special time or class, buy the language book and get
started. I think you can see pattern; we all have certain talents and
abilities. My Aunt used to tell me, whatever you can learn can’t be
taken away from you. Her point was that we should learn all you can.
Build your own inner library of facts,
skills and abilities. Some of the worlds best business men have never
set foot in any business school. Some of the worlds best language
grammarians have become experts by own self study efforts. Some of the
worlds most powerful preacher have never seen the inside of a
theological school. The list goes on and on of those has set their mind
to the task of learning. People with this type of drive and
determination are often the pillars of society; their talents have
benefited us all.
My challenge to you is to learn all
that you can, to apply yourself, and encourage other to learn, don’t
wait for a special time or place. Take Care!
I retired from United States Navy
in 2003, after serving over 21 years of enlisted active duty on board
several different ships and a few shore assignments. I am married. My
wife and i have two daughters. We have two dogs, Chow Chow's, to be
exact. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Arts (Focus area
Psychology) from Excelsior College class 2004.

Learning and Memory
In
Learning and Memory, leading researcher Howard Eichenbaum provides a
new-fashioned synthesis of the contemporary learning and memory fields.
Utilizing three key strategies, the book achieves this synthesis by
first taking an interdisciplinary approach, integrating theories and
research from the fields of animal learning, human memory, and
neuroscience. Next, Eichenbaum incorporates animal and human research
literature throughout to give the book a strong comparative dimension.
Finally, Eichenbaum organizes the text around multiple memory systems,
moving from simple to more complex forms of learning and
memory.Complemented by a comprehensive art program featuring nearly 175
drawings and photos, Learning and Memory is a path-breaking text,
thoroughly integrating neuroscience and behavioral research to clearly
convey the contemporary science of the mind.

Motor Control And Learning
Expanded and completely updated, the fourth edition of
Motor Control and Learning: A Behavioral Emphasis is a comprehensive
introduction to motor behavior. The authoritative text frames the
important issues, theories, persons, and research in the field in a
reader-friendly way, allowing students to learn the most pertinent
information in the field. Motor Control and Learning: A Behavioral
Emphasis, Fourth Edition, is the only graduate textbook that combines
motor control and motor learning with the in-depth details students need
in order to understand the topic and distinguish between different sides
of an issue. Authored by two of the leading researchers in the field,
the new edition features an up-to-date review of the latest research,
more than 400 new references, new figures, and these new features: ·
Highlight boxes featuring in-depth discussion of relevant issues, new
topics, and classic research · Selected quotes representing important
contributions to the field, interpreted for current and future
researchers · Web-based references that support and enhance students'
comprehension of the material Motor Control and Learning: A Behavioral
Emphasis, Fourth Edition, is the only text that focuses specifically on
the motor learning and motor control areas of motor behavior. The new
features and ancillaries make it ideal for students to use as a text and
for professionals to access as a reference. Part I introduces the fields
of motor control and learning. It provides a brief history; explains the
tools of motor behavior research; presents the information-processing
approach, which is fundamental to understanding how humans think and
act; and describes how attention influences motor behavior. Part II
addresses various factors contributing to the complex whole of the human
motor system. It examines the roles of sensory information and the ways
in which information from the environment influences movement behavior,
considers the central control and representation of action, deals with
laws and models regarding speed and accuracy, looks at the coordination
needed for more complex tasks, and addresses factors that make people
differ in their skilled behaviors. Part III addresses performance
changes that accompany motor learning. It describes the research methods
used for studying and measuring motor learning, discusses the effects of
various conditions under which a learner can practice motor skills,
considers the effects of providing augmented information about what was
done, and examines the empirical relationships and principles concerned
with the retention and transfer of motor skills.
